PCB Seeks ICC Clarification Over Indian Anthem Mix-Up at Gaddafi Stadium

Indian anthem before Aus vs Eng in Lahore - PCB asks ICC for clarification

📍 Lahore, Pakistan – The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has reached out to the International Cricket Council (ICC) for an explanation after the Indian national anthem was mistakenly played for a brief moment at Gaddafi Stadium during the Champions Trophy.

The incident occurred just before the match between Australia and England. The UK national anthem was played without issue, but instead of Australia’s anthem following, the Indian national anthem mistakenly began playing before being quickly stopped and corrected.

PCB Blames ICC for Anthem Error

According to ESPNcricinfo, the PCB is dissatisfied with the mistake and holds the ICC responsible. A PCB official stated:

💬 “Since this is an ICC event, the anthem playlist was created and distributed by the ICC. They were responsible for playing the correct anthems. The presence of India’s anthem in the playlist is questionable, given that India is not playing any matches in Pakistan.”

Repeated Issues Frustrate PCB

This is the second time in two days that the PCB has sought clarification from the ICC over incidents undermining Pakistan’s role as the host nation.

🔹 In an earlier controversy, Pakistan’s name was omitted from the official tournament logo during the India vs. Bangladesh match in Dubai.
🔹 This differed from the broadcast graphics used in previous matches, including Pakistan vs. New Zealand in Karachi, where both the tournament name and ‘Pakistan’ were visible.
🔹 The ICC cited this as a technical error, but the PCB remained unsatisfied with the explanation. The ICC has since assured that Pakistan’s name will be displayed correctly during Sunday’s high-profile India vs. Pakistan clash in Dubai.

Thrilling Australia-England Encounter Overshadowed by Controversy

Despite the anthem mishap, the Australia vs. England match produced the tournament’s biggest crowd and most dramatic chase.

🏏 Australia successfully chased down 351 runs, winning by five wickets with 15 balls to spare, setting a new record chase in the Champions Trophy.

With tensions rising off the field, all eyes will be on the ICC to ensure no further missteps as the tournament progresses.
