Former IGP & NTMC Director Among 10 Officials Summoned to International Crimes Tribunal

Dhaka, February 20, 2025 – The International Crimes Tribunal has summoned 10 former law enforcement officials, including ex-Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun and former NTMC Director General Major General (Retd.) Ziaul Ahsan, on charges of genocide and crimes against humanity related to the suppression of anti-discrimination movements in July-August.

Officials Summoned to the Tribunal

The accused were brought to the tribunal from Kashimpur and Keraniganj Central Prisons in separate prison vans.

Among the officials presented before the tribunal are:

  • Former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun
  • Former NTMC Director General Major General (Retd.) Ziaul Ahsan
  • Former Dhaka District SP Md. Abdullah Al Kafi
  • Former Jatrabari Police OC Abul Hasan
  • Former DMP Mirpur DC Md. Jasim Uddin Molla
  • Former Additional SP (Savar Circle) Md. Shahidur Islam
  • Former DB Inspector (Dhaka North) Md. Arafat Hossain
  • Former DMP Gulshan OC Md. Mazharul Haque

Additionally, two former RAB officials were also presented:

  • Former SP Mohiuddin Faruqi
  • Former Additional SP (Barishal Range) Alep Uddin

Legal Proceedings & Tribunal Order

Md. Golam Mortuza Mojumder, issued the summons following a petition from the prosecution. This legal action is part of ongoing efforts to address crimes against humanity committed during the suppression of anti-discrimination protests.

The court has granted a one-day interrogation for former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, while investigations against the other accused must be completed within two months.

Background of the Case

The case revolves around allegations of mass atrocities during the July-August anti-discrimination movements. The prosecution claims that the accused played key roles in suppressing civilian protests, leading to severe human rights violations.

The tribunal’s decision marks a significant step in ensuring justice and accountability for past crimes.
